River City Church in Vancouver, Washington, announced the first every Metaverse mission trip set for August 2023.

"In this age of technological innovation and digital connections, it's time for the Church to step into a new frontier. Get ready to embark on a journey like no other --- 'Mission Trip to the Metaverse,'" the church writes on their site.

So, what exactly is the Metaverse? TechTarget defines it as "...a single, shared, immersive, persistent, 3D virtual space where humans experience life in ways they could not in the physical world." The Metaverse is often couples with VR headsets or AR (augmented reality) glasses. Companies believe that the Metaverse will be perfect for trade and e-commerce. What most users recognize the Metaverse as is a virtual reality world where all people from different types of cultures and backgrounds rub shoulders with each other.

As of 2023, the Metaverse has roughly 400 million monthly active users. "As believers, we are called to bring the light of Jesus into every corner of our world, and the Metaverse is no exception," River Church writes. "This mission trip will empower you to engage with a diverse group of people, foster genuine connections, and demonstrate the transformative power of the love of Jesus."

A perk of virtual mission trips is the accessibility. Traditional mission trips are often restricted by time, physical challenges, and travel limitations. By using technology, now mission trips are incredibly accessible to everyone.

The mission trip is open and available to anyone who wants to join. Prices are $150 if you already own your own VR headset, or $500 if you do not.
